Borders and Frames: Cinematic Genealogies and Contemporary Interventions
Prof. Philip Rosen (Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University)
This paper discusses borders in relation to the bounding of space in film. It proposes a genealogy of the narrativization of borders and cinematic framing going back to the novel, showing how a desire to dematerialize space, frames and borders is manifest in the editing codes of classical Hollywood cinema. But surprisingly, an analogous impulse can be found in important accounts of the present as a radically new, globalized era.
