Academic Profession (如何讓自己成為學術界一員)
Dr. K.C. Ting (Professor and Head of the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
One of the common goals for obtaining a doctoral degree is to pursue an academic career that carries a professorial rank (e.g. a faculty member at a university). However, in many cases, programs of doctoral studies contain a very small, if any, amount of understanding for how to become a successful faculty member. This presentation covers the essential aspects of a faculty position including academic infrastructure, academic departments, academic responsibilities, performance evaluation, institutional culture, collegiality, professional network, diversity, resource generation and utilization, faculty issues vs. administrative issues, getting started and professional development, strategic framing, and things worthy of attention. A faculty member needs to be a systems thinker and a leader in many ways, the topic of systems and leadership will also be presented. The plan is to have sufficient time for open discussions during and after the presentation.
